Scottsdale, Arizona – Jeopardy® Junior has nothing on the 154 Arizona Middle School Science Bowl contestants.  Here, team members are required to be quick thinkers and buzz-in before their competition. In this high-intensity academic competition, milliseconds mattered.

This Saturday marked the seventh annual Middle School Science Bowl competition in the State of Arizona. Over thirty middle school teams competed. The high intensity event hosted a wide array of students from diverse backgrounds.  Participants included students from the following schools:  BASIS Ahwatukee; BASIS Chandler; BASIS Mesa; Basis Oro Valley; BASIS Peoria; BASIS Phoenix; BASIS Scottsdale; BASIS Tucson North; Chandler Preparatory Academy; Gila River Sacaton School District #18; Gila Crossing Community School; Kyrene Aprende Middle School; Loyola Academy; Madison #1 Middle School; Mesa Preparatory Academy; Rough Rock Community Schools; Self Development Charter School; and  Veritas Preparatory Academy.

The Opening Ceremony kicked-off with an inspiring address by Robert Witwer, Vice President of Advanced Technology for Honeywell Aerospace. Later, teams broke out into divisions where they played in round robins. After a long day of exhilarating rounds, high scoring teams from the morning Round Robin competition moved up into a Double Elimination tournament. The Double Elimination rounds gave the top teams the opportunity to play at least twice. The winning teams advanced to the end. In the end, the top three teams were recognized in an awards ceremony. The students were honored with medals while their teams received trophies. Those teams were:  Basis Peoria Team #1 in third place; Basis Tucson North Team #1 in second place; and BASIS Scottsdale Team #1 in first place.

The competition was administered by volunteers from various community organizations. They came from organizations such as Appointment-Plus, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, REDW LLC, Shamrock Foods, Arizona State University, MSS Technologies, Inc., Solugenix Corporation and American Express.
