PHOENIX, Ariz. – February 25, 2012 — Over 26 teams from throughout the State of Arizona competed in the most intense science competition for middle school students ever! Teams included students from the following schools:

  • Altadena Middle School
  • BASIS Chandler
  • BASIS Flagstaff
  • Basis Oro Valley
  • BASIS Peoria
  • Basis Scottsdale
  • BASIS Tucson
  • Chandler Preparatory Academy
  • Grand Canyon Prep
  • Madison Park School
  • Mesa Preparatory Academy
  • Self Development Charter School
  • Veritas Preparatory Academy

Middle school students were quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy. Competing teams from diverse backgrounds were comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. After a morning of round robin sessions, only the top eight teams made it to a double elimination tournament.

Though the teams practiced for months, only one team came out on top. As the winning team of the 2012 Arizona Middle School Science Bowl, BASIS Scottsdale Team #1 will go on to represent the state at the National Science Bowl in D.C. The national event is scheduled to held April 26 – April 30, 2012.
